Lane Departure Behavior Analysis of Combined Curves Based on A Driving Simulator

ABSTRACT:Lane departures are responsible for many side-swipe, rear-end and single-vehicle run-off-road crashes. Identifying the relationships between lane departures and combined curve geometric design characteristics will help roadway designers to locate appropriate countermeasures, but few studies have addressed this need. This study therefore used a driving simulator to replicate a four-lane (two lanes in each direction) divided mountainous freeway. Lane departure events were collected from 30 drivers, and the departure behaviors were divided into two types: in the direction of centrifugal force (IDCF) and against the direction of centrifugal force (ADCF). Negative binomial models were used to analyze the relationships between lane departure behaviors and four types of combined curves’ geometric design. Results showed that: 1) there are significant differences between IDCF and ADCF lane departure behaviors; 2) radius, super-elevation and circular curve length of combined curves are significant variables affecting lane departure; and 3) the significant effects of geometric design characteristics on lane departure differed by type of combined curve.
